How often are you supposed to get your oil changed? Is it every 3,000 miles? I know when you get your oil?

changed, they put that sticker on your windshield that tells you at what mileage you should get your next oil change. Is it really important to get your oil changed when your mileage gets to what that sticker says? Or in all honesty is it pretty safe to go over a certain amount of miles? And if so, how many miles can you go over, before you are really jeopardizing your car?

Thanks. From a typical female who does not know s**t about cars. :DHow often are you supposed to get your oil changed? Is it every 3,000 miles? I know when you get your oil?
There is no reason to change your oil at 3000 miles. That was set up many years ago when engines were much dirtier and oil technology was considerably less advanced. Mobil has an oil that lasts in excess of 5000 miles. If you have a Chrysler vehicle newer than 2000 ,then the oil change schedule is 7500 miles. I would imagine other makers have the same set up. Oil change places make a lot of money changing oil, and the more times they get you to change your oil, the more money they make. So to make an estimate 5000 is completely safe. Just make sure you check your oil level regularly. at least once a month( more if it is burning or leaking it).How often are you supposed to get your oil changed? Is it every 3,000 miles? Nowadays, the engines run much cleaner with less %26quot;Blow-By%26quot; from the pistons. Back before our current clean engines, internal combustion engines had a lot of %26quot;Blow-By%26quot; from the pistons. The reason for changing the oil at 3000 miles was to remove the %26quot;Acid%26quot; hydrocarbons floating in the engine oil. These %26quot;Acids%26quot; advanced the deterioration of seals and metal components quickly. Look inside of your vehicle's Owner's Manual in the Maintenance Section to find the manufacturer's recommended interval. Usually modern cars change the oil at 7500-10,000 miles. How often are you supposed to get your oil changed? Is it every 3,000 miles? I know when you get your oil?
If your car is under warranty. Best do it then. Or void the warranty. In truth oil is good forever. Unless you over heat it. The additives are what breaks down. So look at the color of the oil if it becomes very dark brown time to chang e it. The oil additives have all the particles they can handle. This depends on the car as to how far to go. Blow back, how hard you drive, terrain you drive in.ETC. Most of it is a rip of your oil should go 6000 miles. In a good engine. No problems at all. It just cuts down on the oil companies profits if you do that. Little else. How often are you supposed to get your oil changed? Is it every 3,000 miles? I know when you get your oil?
its funny that people still get there oil changed every 3,000 miles its not true now a days its now a myth and and a get rich quick scam for the oil company's today they recommend every 5,000 to 7,000 miles because to day we have more advanced engines and engine oils the 3,000 mile oil change was way back when we had carburetor cars because the carburetors dumbed a lot of gas and contaminates in the engine oil if you don't believe me check this out

if you put just regular oil in your vehicle then yes change every 3000 miles but for more money you could go to a full synthetic oil and wont have to change every 3000 milesHow often are you supposed to get your oil changed? Is it every 3,000 miles? I know when you get your oil?

3,000- miles or 3 months is the recommended interval for changing your oil for MOST cars. Some cars, if you use a specific oil, are rated to go more.

But about going over that, it all depends on the quality of oil you are using, and if you have added any stabilizers, such as Lucas oil stabilizer, to the mix. Most likely you don't have the stabilizer added to the mix. If you are getting a $30.00 oil change, you should not go to far over the recommended interval.

Here is what happens when you leave old oil in your engine:

First the oil breaks down and does not lubricate as well and adhere to the mechanical moving parts like it used to.

left in there longer, it will start to foam, which means instead of oil lubricating the moving parts, air bubbles will keep the oil from making complete contact with your parts, thus causing friction and your engine getting out of spec.

Leave it in there longer, you get sludge, which adds weight and rotating mass, making the engine work harder, and less efficient.

this sludge will eventually harden, and really screw up your valve train, as it tends to collect in the valve cover.

All the while, your oil filter is collecting all the debris, sludge and gunk and getting clogged, and the filter starts getting sucked in, and just fails, which will mean no more oil circulation, hello fried engine.

So you take your chances by leaving oil in your car for too long, that is why it is recommended you change it.

I would not go over 1,000 miles over the recommended, and deffinately over 6 months. Now that I have said all this, guess what I got to do.How often are you supposed to get your oil changed? Is it every 3,000 miles? I know when you get your oil?
My dad has been a certified mechanic for 30 years, and this is what he's always told me:

First, it depends on if it's regular oil, or synthetic. If it's regular oil, they will put 3,000 miles on the sticker. In actuality it's 3,000-5,000, but they put the lower number, just in case.

For synthetic, they'll add 5,000, when but it's actually 5,000-7,000.

If you drive less than 1,000 miles per month, then make that every 3-5 months for regular oil, or every 5-7 months for synthetic. And if you don't know if it's regular or not, then it probably is! Check the sticker in your window and see what type of oil it says.
